Monument to the Man

A Monument to the Man and his Wife

In 1860, a few years after Minnesota became a state, the legislature passed a law regarding the interment of the dead.  This law required cities and villages to establish and maintain cemeteries for their people.

In 1861, Hillside Cemetery, just north of Perkins, was created to serve the village of Monticello.  At the time its location was at the southern edge of town.
